The Permanent Representative of Iraq addresses the Conference on Disarmament

The Permanent Representative of Iraq, Ambassador Hussain Mahmood Al-Khateeb, addressed the Conference on Disarmament on 25/6/2019, reiterating in his speech Iraq’s firm positions on the four main issues of the Conference, stressing the importance of complete nuclear disarmament at the top of the Conference’s priorities, since the devastating nature of these weapons makes their elimination absolutely essential for the survival of all mankind and that their continued existence constitutes a threat to international peace and security, and renewed Iraq’s support for the establishment of nuclear-free zones throughout the world, particularly the implementation of the Middle East resolution of the 1995 Review Conference on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Proliferation Treaty and it’s extension, and in accordance and in accordance with the Plan of Action listed in the Final Document of the 2010 Review Conference.

The permanent representative also affirmed Iraq’s support for decision 73/564 on the establishment of the Middle East Free Zone, calling on the sponsors of the Middle East resolution as being the depositary countries of the Treaty to implement the commitments they made in establishing the zone and implementing the Middle East resolution, noting that the progress of holding the conference in 2019 is an important step aimed at avoiding the negative impact of this issue on the NPT Review Conference in 2020.
